Keeping It Green in Sarasota

Keeping It Green in Sarasota

At the recent EcoFest held in Sarasota, Dave’s Auto Repair helped support the Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences “Generation Green Team” by sponsoring special coupons in the Green Totes that were sold at their booth. These bags are also sponsored by other members of the Green Business Partnership and they help fund activities for the Green Team. Although these bags sell for $15, Dave’s Auto Repair donated electronic coupons for $20 off any service or repair. “Although we service and repair enviro-friendly vehicles, it was important to help the SSAS students as they raise funds for their environmental and sustainable economics education,” stated Karan Kathmann. “The monies they raise will help fund field trips that give them new insights to such topics as evolving energy sources. As they utilize this knowledge, it creates a better community for all of us.” The Green Totes (and the Dave’s Auto Repair $20 coupon) will appear at other fundraisers in the future, so if ... read more

Exhaust Service

Whenever we talk about exhaust service, most people normally think about exhaust pipes and mufflers. Well, actually, exhaust service is a lot more comprehensive these days. For example, catalytic converters were mandated in 1976 and on-board emission control computers in 1990. Governmental emissions requirements have forced manufacturers to come up with much more sophisticated ways to comply with environmental regulations. Exhaust service has really become exhaust and emissions service. High-tech computer controlled emissions devices are now a big part of exhaust service. Because it is so sophisticated, your vehicle manufacturer recommends you have your emission system checked out by a qualified Sarasota exhaust technician regularly to make sure everything is working right – usually every 6 months or 10,000 miles/16,000 kilometers. If your Check Engine light comes on, especially if it’s flashing, get your car looked at right away. Technicians at Dave’s Auto Repair handle emission pro ... read more

Synthetic Oil For Sarasota Autos

If you aren’t currently using synthetic motor oil in your Sarasota vehicle, maybe now’s the time to consider it. Need more information? Well, synthetic motor oil is a substitute for petroleum based oil. Synthetic oil doesn’t gel or gum-up like petroleum based oil and it doesn’t vaporize as easily. It protects better in severe driving conditions like stop and go driving around Sarasota, as well as in very hot or very cold conditions. More and more new vehicles are being delivered with full synthetic motor oil; with the recommendation to use synthetic for the life of the vehicle. Why is this? Synthetic motor oil maximizes engine power and fuel economy. To see why; we’d need a microscope, so we’ll have to settle for using our imaginations. The molecules of conventional motor oil are long hydrocarbon chains. Synthetic motor oil, on the other hand, has uniform, round molecules. Which is more slippery, a pile of pencils or a pile of marbles? Synthetic motor oil lubricates better because ... read more

Fuel Injectors

The last new car sold with a carburetor in North America rolled out of the dealership in 1990. Since then, all new vehicles have had fuel injectors. In very simple terms, a fuel injector is a valve that squirts fuel into your engine. Your engine control computer tells the fuel injector how much gas to deliver as well as the precise time it should be delivered. Of course this happens thousands of times a minute. Fuel injection is a much more precise way of delivering fuel than carburetors. That translates into better fuel economy and power. Virtually all fuel injectors for gas engines are known as port fuel injectors because they deliver the fuel to a port just outside the cylinder. Port fuel injectors operate at about 40 to 80 pounds per square inch of pressure. A few auto makers have introduced gas direct injection systems on some engines recently. These systems inject the gas directly into the cylinders under very high pressure – hundreds of times the pressure of port injection syst ... read more

Will it be dusty? Armed with the answers to these questions, you can start a trip inspection to help you prepare your Sarasota vehicle for your big adventure. Car Battery Replacement At Dave’s Auto Repair In Sarasota

Hello, welcome to Dave’s Auto Repair. Today’s focus is batteries. It seems like everything in Sarasota runs on batteries. Of course, the batteries we’re most concerned with here at Dave’s Auto Repair are those in our customer’s vehicles. Just like the batteries in our smoke detectors or TV remote, car batteries wear out and need to be replaced. There are a couple of things Sarasota drivers should know when looking for a new battery. Look for two measurements that come into play: cold cranking amps and reserve capacity. Let’s start with cold cranking amps. Battery Replacement At Dave’s Auto Repair This can be thought of as the power output used to start a cold Automobile engine. The number of cold cranking amps you need depends on your vehicle and where you live in FL, specifically how cold it is. (Many FL motorists have first-hand experience trying to start their car on a cold winter morning.) The two factors are that the colder your Automobile’s engine is, the more power it takes to ... read more

Charge It In Sarasota For Extended Battery Life

Here’s an interesting statistic for our friends in Sarasota, FL: Only thirty percent of car batteries make it to forty-eight months. And the life expectancy varies by where you live. It ranges from fifty-one months in extremely cold areas to just thirty months in extremely hot climates. Why is that? It turns out that it’s our modern cars with all their electric accessories that are to blame. Things like, GPS, DVDs, and entertainment computers are keeping car batteries from maintaining a full charge. The longer a battery goes with a low charge, the sooner it’ll die. So you must recharge your battery. This is the job of the alternator. The problem comes when the car’s demand for electricity is high and we are driving in stop and go conditions or short trips around Sarasota or Gulf Gate Estates. The alternator just can’t keep up. The result is shortened battery life. So what can we do to improve our battery’s health? We need to keep the battery as close to a full charge as possible. T ... read more

Why People In Sarasota Hesitate to Get their Vehicle Serviced

A recent report stated that over 80 percent of the vehicles on our Sarasota, FL roads have one or more service or repair that’s needed, but hasn’t been taken care of. Now that’s a lot of undone service. That translates into something over 160 million vehicles in the U.S. alone. Some of the neglected items are minor. Others are serious safety concerns. There are several reasons why we hesitate to take care of recommended services; especially services that our Sarasota, FL automotive advisor recommends when we’re in for something else, like an oil change. The first issue boils down to comfort with car care. We don’t always feel we know enough to make good decisions. Some of that can be attributed to the fact that vehicles are so reliable these days. They almost become an appliance. Of course you love your Automobile, but if you don’t have to worry about it breaking down all the time, you’re not forced to think as much about preventive maintenance. Perhaps your dad knew a lot about car ... read more

Differential Service in Sarasota FL – What You Need To Know

Don’t be embarrassed if you don’t know what a differential is – you will in a moment. That fact is that if you drive a car anywhere in Sarasota, FL, you have a differential. Whether your vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, you have a differential. You might even have two or three. As you might guess from the name, a differential’s job is to compensate for differences. Specifically the differences in wheel speed when turning. For instance, imagine taking a corner near your Sarasota, FL home. Your inside wheel has a shorter distance to travel than the outside wheel as you go around the corner. That means that your outside wheel has to turn faster to keep pace with the inside wheel. The differential allows the wheels to turn at different speeds while still providing power. Without a differential, our tires would scrub and hop along the pavement during turns. You’ve probably noticed the big bugle in the middle of the rear axle when you’re behind a truck ... read more
